Justin's New Coat - Story-telling with Daddy

D: You and Mommy read a story called A New Coat For Anna didn't you? And didn't you guys want to write a story called A New Coat for Justin?

C: Yes.

D: Can you tell me the story? I haven't heard it.

C: Um. I think we did something with Mommy, but I can't remember it.

D: Well, just make up a new one. How did it start out? Was something wrong with Justin's coat?

C: Yes.

D: Well, tell me the story.

C: Um. Once upon a time, Justin's coat was getting very small and he tried to snap it, but couldn't …… (indistinct because of Phillip crying in the background) …And… we went to the store to get medicine for you and Justin. And while the medicine was getting made, we shopped. Mom said that we should try to look for a new coat for Justin.

D: So Justin's coat was getting too small and you had to go into the store anyways, and Mommy said you should look for a new coat for Justin.

C: And we went into the kids' clothes section and found a coat. And….. (indistinct)

D: You found a coat and just...that's all? You just found a coat. And did you try it on?

C: Justin…Yes, we did.

D: Justin tried it on? Justin, how did it fit? …. How did the coat fit? Was it too small?

J: No.

D: Was it too big?

J: Yes.

D: Or was it just right?

J: Just right.

D: Was it just right? What did it look like?

M: A little bit big.

D: Was it just a little bit big so that you could grow into it?

J: Yeah.

D: Okay, what did it look like?

C: Well, it was grey with black and white stripes….

D: Grey with black and white stripes.

C: And it had "Game 99" written on the back.

D: It did?

C: Yeah.

D: What else? Justin, do you remember anything about the coat?

J: No.

D: Did it have pockets?

J: Yeah.

C: Slanted pockets

D: Slanted pockets? Okay. So did you like the coat?

J: Yeah.

D: Did you ask Mommy if you could get it?

J: Yeah.

D: And what did she say?

J: Yes.

D: She said "yes" you could get it. And so you bought it and took it home, right?

C: But first we had to pick up the medicine.

D: You picked up the medicine for Daddy.

C & J: And Phillip!

M: Were we able to get Daddy's medicine that day?

C: I don't think so. Did we?

D: No, I don't think you did. Now, where do you wear the coat, Justin?

J: Uh, um…

D: Do you wear your coat to the store or to church? How is this coat different from Anna's coat?

J: She stopped at any store to look at herself.

D: Yeah, well, did you do that on your way home? Did you wear your coat home?

J: No.

D: No, you just took it home. Did Mommy have to make the coat? Did Anna's Mommy have to have the coat made?

C & J: Yeah.

C: But this story was different because we bought…

D: It was already made and you just went and bought it…..

C: Uh, huh.

D: And why could you do that?

C: Because….

D: What did Mommy have...to buy the coat?

C: Money.

D: Money. Did Anna's Mommy have money?

C: No.

D: No. So she couldn't just go buy a coat. Did the stores have coats?

C: No. Not even potatoes. There was hardly any food!

D: So they couldn't go to the store like you did. But you still got a new coat, didn't you Justin.

J: Yeah.

C: Yeah, and also, she had Grandpa's golden watch and some other nice things.

D: Your Mommy had Grandpa's golden watch?

C: No… No, no, no, no.

D: Anna's Mommy.

C: Yes. And some other nice things.

D: Have you read any other stories that are like this? What about…. Charlie Needs a Cloak?

C: Well, I don't remember it.

D: Do you remember…

J: The tailor made….

D: …….. Pelle's New Suit?

C: No, we haven't even read it.

M: Claire!

C: Oh! I though I hadn't!

D: Sometimes we don't remember these stories.

M: She just read them yesterday.

C: Charlie Needs A Cloak

D: What is a cloak?

C: A coat.

D: A coat?

C: Yes. (Reading) Charlie was a shepherd. He had a cozy house, a big ….. crook, and a flock of fat sheep.

D: What's a crook?

C: I don't know.

D: Isn't that a robber?

C: No. That's a crook (pointing).

D: Oh, it's a stick with a hook on the end.

C: That's his staff. But everyone said. "Charlie needs a cloak." Poor Charlie.. He really needed a new cloak. So in the spring, Charlie sheared his sheep. They didn't like it and he was running away and he was running away because they didn't want to get sheared.

D: Hmm.

C: And he was in the bush because he was cold!

D: I think he's hiding.

C: Yeah, because he doesn't want to get sheared. He washed the wool. Oh! He's washing it on his body! And carded the wool - straightened it out. He doesn't like his wool that way. Then Charlie spun the wool into yarn. Oh…. (indistinct)….. He wanted a red cloak, so he picked some pokeberries during the late summer and boiled them over a fire. Then Charlie dyed the yarn red. After the yarn was dry, he put the strands on the loom. He's trying to…(indistinct)
